As far as flags go, I don't really like any of the gender-identity variants outside of the basic trans flag. Genderqueer/fluid/nonbinary all have strange colour schemes I don't care for.

I'm really enjoying all the activity recently though  I appreciate all of you so much.

Aye, it's all really thanks to you, Kyrie. You make this place so damn welcoming :hugs:

 Don't be so quick to give me any credit, I just work here.

I think a good community requires having a lot of people putting in the time and focus to make things consistently better. I just try to make sure I live up to those standards I have set.

I actually didn't know what the flag looked like, haha! There are so many flags I really don't keep track.

If you waved a flag with a pineapple with sunglasses on it and told me THAT was the enby flag, I would go with it.

I'm excited for Ram's reply to Leeva, Cas :3 Don't be nervous, unpredictability is the spice of RP!

Thanks for the description, it helps me to know how Leeva can react if I know what they're seeing. Like I didn't know if Ram was tall, tiny, furry, young, old, etc. Now I do :3

Leeva appreciates appearances of all kinds!

Oh shet, now I'm wondering if Ram shouldn't be furry like. To be fair, it might make more sense since just a felt vest shouldn't keep them very warm in the snow and frostlands.

Anyways I'm thinking of writing a post but since I'm going on holidays I figure I probably won't put it up for a while. As for Ram's answer to Leeva, what language did Leeva actually address them? Common tongue or something else? This may be my first real dialogue in writing yet <3

Leeva knows common ^.^ They also speak the traditional language of Trees . . . because they're . . . you know . . . a tree sprite . . .

I'm Brilliant!

Happy Holiday!!!

Happy holidays <3

A follow-up to my question about Leeva: what do they actually look like? I've been imagining a ten centimeter tall sprite but I've just realised that may not be most accurate.
Also, is it problematic that I wrote Ramår into meeting Rizali's party in the night-time?

It's not problematic at all! The other players' characters are currently asleep, I think.

Leeva is basically a mass of branches and roots and leaves that's animated by life energy. They can shapeshift into anything a mass of branches might morph into, like a weird stick statue that moves, basically.

As far as size, they usually come up to about a human adult's knee.

It's probably a good time for me to wake Kaegan up and make some comment about how Rizali's spell did exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to do.

Kaegan exits the tent to see Rizali with a shrubbery and a person who looks lost as hell. Rizali quickly says "this isn't what it looks like, I promise."

So there's a character type that I've always wanted to play, and I don't know if it's a better idea to do it in AVftS or in a new RP. Essentially it's a weird style of mage that just does magic in unconventional ways. I referenced it a little bit with Rizali, who enjoys doing standard spells with strange or imaginative weaves, but that's such a light version of the concept.

Originally I was inspired to do it by "Prequel Adventure", particularly this page of it, in which a specialist of the mysticism branch of magic in Elder Scrolls explains how he sees magic to the main character, a Khajiit named Katia Managan. The quote follows, entirely collapsible for those who don't want to read several paragraphs on it. Summary will follow it so don't read it if you're not interested.

Spoiler: ShowHide
Quote
It’s like… to someone who only knows how to dig with a spoon, the notion of digging something as large as a trench will terrify them. All they know are spoons, so as far as they’re concerned, digging is simply difficult. The only way they can imagine it getting any easier is if they change – digging with a spoon until they get stronger, faster, and tougher. And the dangerous people, they’ll actually try this.

Everyone who will ever oppose you in life is a crazy, burly dude with a spoon, and you will never be able to outspoon them. Even the powerful people, they’re just spooning harder and more vigorously than everyone else, like hungry orphan children eating soup. Except the soup is power. I’ll level with you here: I have completely lost track of this analogy.

What I’m saying, giant talking cat, is that everyone is stupid. They attain a narrow grasp of reality and live their life as though there is nothing else. But you, me, creatures with imagination – we aren’t constrained by our experiences. We’re inspired by them. If we have trouble digging with a spoon, we build a shovel. If we’re stopped by a wall, we make a door. And if we can’t make a door, we ask ourselves whether we really need an opening to pass through something solid in the first place.

You point out that you’re not a ghost, and that you do need an opening to pass through solid objects.

No – that’s your mistake, he replies. That’s why you’re still not thinking like a witchhunter. You’re trying to do things right, and that’s wrong. Mysticism means taking a step back – accepting that the very laws of reason and logic you abide by are merely one option of many. It means knowing you only see half the picture in a world where everyone else thinks they see the whole thing. It means having the sheer arrogance to have humility.

That’s why I’m saying you have to think like a witchhunter. You have to be a little wrong to be completely right – to abandon truth in favor of questioning falsehood. If you think something’s the easiest way, you have to know you’re wrong. You have to understand how to stand against the very stance of understanding! You have to know you are inferior; that your knowledge and perceptions will never stand up to the true scope of all possible reality. You have to be a little further from perfect, and embrace that notion.

In summary, it says that in understanding that you are constrained by the rules you were originally taught, you can start to see alternate possibilities. It's better to consider logic and natural laws options than... well, laws. The best example I can give of my own writing was a character on The Sinking Lure who was named Zeredah. She was a young girl who was invisible because of a curse she'd been dealing with since she turned 13, but she also had very strangely-manifesting magical powers. For example, she could cross magical barriers because she assumed they'd be easier to open from the other side, or she could stop the rain because she was curious what the sun was thinking about and wanted to ask it. I really enjoyed this character because her approach to things was nonsensical by traditional ideas, but if you took a step back you could see why it worked.

I don't know if it's too silly an idea for this RP or not, but I also don't want to spread our fantasy RP points too thin. Maybe a character in the empire?

Edit: Mm! I just thought of another good example of the type of power I'm talking about. Sans in Undertale. Specifically how he can just warp from one place to another and, while it's referenced in the game itself, it's not utilised to be a game-breaking power. I love that sort of goofiness. Of course, there's a possibility of seeing his extreme power at one point in the game, but you have to do a lot to push him there. Otherwise he just sort of does silly things, and I love that.

Sure, I love Magilou.

I don't really have any issue with a character that does magic in different ways because their understanding of how it works is just a bit different than everyone else's, that seems pretty sensible to me. I think the idea that this person can do that, has a potentially godlike ability that just happens to not ever be use in game breaking ways, and is invisible all the time is just a few too many "I'm different!" characteristics rolled up into one than I think I could stomach for the time being.

I am interested in doing another collab post on Tuesday after my computer is built and the internet gets here, if you're so inclined.

Oh for sure, I was just writing the NPCs in the case of Sinking Lure and Zeredah would never be a character that actually had stakes in anything. Most of my TSL characters would be game-breakingly powerful. I just kind of want to play someone who approaches magic in silly ways, because that's my favourite type of mage character.

I'd love to jump into a collab post once I'm home from class!

As such time has passed, I say we go forward with the collaboration even if nobody else is interested in joining in. I think it's fair to give people maybe until I get home from class tomorrow to express interest in having their characters represented and, should nobody speak up, just do it ourselves then? :P

That would give everyone approximately 18 hours from the time of this post to volunteer to join us in our magnificent brainstorming session.

And we're back! Welcome everyone to the second edition of A Voice From the Storm. It's been a little bit and not everyone who was participating in the original has made the journey back with us, so I thought I'd just do a reset. If anyone wants to, we can reset the OOC thread as well, but I didn't know if it was necessary at this point.

The world is, for the most part, the same. My idea with this new post is to not set a new plot in motion right away. I'd prefer to have our characters be introduced, then we can spend some time in this pub space deciding what it is we all are interested in writing, and make it work together! That seems a lot more fun to me (and also Riza isn't around to bully everyone into going across the forest with them).

As always with the CalRef style of rp, feel free to make any new observations you like. The world is only as developed as is stated in text, so if you want to mention something that I haven't or develop Coxarif further than it has been in this one post, go for it! Be as imaginative and have as much fun as you like ^-^

Welcome back to AVFtS, Refugi.

By the way, if anyone is interested in asking for brainstorming help or plotting out collaborative posts, feel free to use this thread! Anyone can post anything here, whether it be extra fun character facts, questions, or planning. I know sometimes the chat is moving quickly, or you can't quite line up with someone else perfectly in terms of time, but that's why we also have foruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuums!

I would absolutely be happy to, but I also have no idea what I'm doing with any of my characters, past, present, or future.

On request, I have put together a summary of the thread so far, including introducing characters with as best a description I can when they come up for the first time. This isn't extremely detailed by any measure, and having just done so myself I recommend reading back through the thread for more information.

Furthermore, I have marked Garhad, played by Aquila, as well as Gem, played by Phoenix, as abandoned. The people associated with these accounts quietly left some time ago and have not shown any indication of returning, so until they do, we will ignore them in the game. If either of them do return, we'll collaborate on a way to reintroduce their characters should that be a thing they want.

I've also marked Cass, played by Mads, and Banner, played by Lotte, as inactive. They will exist in the current state they were in (Cass with the Aria/Iris/Trevon party in the pub, and Banner hanging out offscreen with Garhad) until the players are able to have some more time to make posts. If either player wants to abandon these characters for new ones or needs anything, please let me know :)

Spoiler: ShowHide
Aria, a young Sylph woman with a lot of curiosity, an interest in healing magic, and an improbable amount of snacks in her bag, enters Black Bow’s Adventuring Guild and Pub. Or, at least, she’d heard it was an adventuring guild. She gets water from the bartender and sits at the window.

Cass, another young woman from outside of Coxarif, passes through the city to join Aria at Black Bow’s.

(Garhad post, but Aquila hasn’t been on the forum since February so I’m not summarising his parts in the assumption he isn’t returning)

Banner, a young revolutionary, has a conversation with someone on the street before entering the tavern as well. He’s dressed in a red-dyed guard uniform and takes umbrage at Garhad’s friend, who is dressed in a regular guard uniform.

Iris, a young antlered woman also interested in healing magic, arrives with her dragon Ginger. She runs into an orc (quite literally) named Barhill the Beast and is taken to the pub by him and his wife before sitting near Aria and Cass.

Herbert Wallace, Master-level Alchemist of the Inverted Spire, hears a voice coming from a small ivory statuette on his desk. Master Westmore stands at the door asking him to prepare a vat of liquid light for the next week. He is, of course, more interested in the new form of alchemy he’s been researching.

Trevon, an automaton commanded by a Cat, is manoeuvred to Black Bow’s.

(Verdegris, now abandoned)

Aria reflects on the fact that she’s not actually sure this is an adventuring guild, as she’s never been to this building before. She is introduced to Cass and Iris (and Ginger) before getting them water, two orders of roasted vegetables, and three bowls of stew for the table. She then introduces herself to Trevon and (Verde) before inviting them over to the table.

(Verde) // (Phoenix, who has also left)

Rizali Corvus, an Adept-level Illusionist at the Inverted Spire, is reading in the library, They are instructed by their assigned handler, Master Carglowyn, to improve their weakest magic abilities before they could take the advancement test for Master. Their weakest school being Alchemy, they are assigned to Master Wallace.

Master Wallace and Adept Corvus have a discussion on the finer points of liquid light while also both being confused as to why Master Wallace was not told Adept Corvus would be assigned to him. Master Wallace takes a few sips of the liquid light (good for the heart, you see) and also throws some other concoction at the wall, which causes a fireball explosion. He paints with it as well, using a strand of Riza’s hair.

Banner attacks Garhad’s friend, beating him half to death with a chair leg or something?

Iris and Ginger have a discussion (over some freshly-acquired pudding that did not come from the bar) over whether they should accompany Aria on this... adventure thing?

Aria is pretty happy about this development. She really likes Iris and Ginger and wants them to come along. That being said, Iris’s suggestion of the FLESH MONGER as a target sort of threw Aria off and she was not sure that would be what she would usually suggest. But it was certainly an idea!

Verde disappears from reality.

Trevon and Kitten have a seat at the table.

Voila.
